Samoth is an Open Source RPG, started in 2004 by few french students and written in C++. This portal aims at introducing the project, and its progression ; in addition, it allows everyone interested in the conception and development of the game to work as a team: every aspect of Samoth will be discussed on the site.
If you want to participate in the project, please say so on the forum.
Ceacy, a.k.a. me.
It's been a long time, but Samoth's back. Several new members, from the ECP (École Centrale Paris), have joined the project, and we're going, in a first time, to rethink a few design points, before resuming the programmation itself.
So, stay tuned ! We sure will :)
Despite what you might think because of the huge amount of time since the last news, we have not -yet- moved to Florida with the funds we raised working on Samoth. However, be assured that had we earned enough money, we would have.
Now, the real news. Even if we are still poor, underfed and single, Samoth will be present in September at the FJV 2007, in Paris, thanks to the Game Creators Network. We do have, so, to work on summertime, since we don't want to show a whole piece of nothingness, do we ?
That's why, soon, there will be : a new release, with brand new features ; a new video, with brand new images ; and new stuff, with brand new, uh, stuff.
In the meantime, I managed to have the World Editor working under Linux, and i'm full of joy, happiness and vodka martini.
Enjoy !
After a lot of work and busy nights, we are proud to announce you a new release of the first branch of Samoth. No kidding.
Featuring :
- an improved scene
- a world editor
- particles effects
- physics for some buildings
- scripting
- bugfixes
Of course, you are likely to find much more information in the README, or by asking on the forums or in irc, since i'm so tired i barely can write this news.
There is also a video, if you are reluctant to install something or don't have Windows installed (a Linux version should come soon).
A first version of the editor - discussed here, but in French, so be careful - has been released ! Allowing to edit XML files, .nut scripts and maps, it is likely to be a rather useful tool. A lot of features are still missing, but, of course, the first i catch saying so is going to die in a very slow and painful way.
Unfortunately, for the moment, it's Windows-only, as I experience some problems between the Gnome Toolkit and Ogre (funny.)
The September Release of Bùri is out ! And we're not late, it's in your head. As usual, read the provided Readme to learn a lot of things, this is only a brief summary :
A new version of the Samoth Bùri executable is available in the Sourceforge project's repository, but, unluckily, i'm far too tired to write a decent news. So, read the archive's Readme, and post in the Samoth forums if you've got questions/requests/money.
!! Download Bùri - August 2006
This isn't a "main" release, just a snapshot of the cvs for demonstration's sake.
A new version of the Samoth Bùri executable is available in the Sourceforge project's repository. This is a small summary of the changes since the last one :
For further info, see the Readme, in the archive. For any feedback, please post in the Samoth forums.
For a french version, see here.
Were present : Trotter, Masterconker, Ariankh, Ceacy
Were almost present (but not for long) : Noon, Fix
First of all, there were not a lot of people ... i wish Kurt, Djibvongenf, Growsam and Santa Claus weren't missing. Anyway, this is a summary of what we decided :
Furthermore, to facilitate the 3d modelers' work, creation of more sketches and artwork is planned.

As said in the forum, a SoundManager class has been created (and some other stuff, around, too), internally using OpenAL - a free audio library designed for video games. It is now possible to play musics and sound effects.
Are currently supported only .wav and .ogg files (but, anyway, mp3 is bad).
Sound definitions are stored in .sound files (in xml), but it is also possible to define them on the fly directly in C++.
I just compiled a snapshot of the current development version (thus, from the 04/13/2006 CVS source tree), for Microsoft Windows.
You can download it here (13.9 Mo). The executable is in the bin/ directory. If you have any feedback, please, post it in the forums.
For now, you only can : - change game options - toy with player's inventory - move in a test map (thanks to masterconker) - jump - look at dropped items, and put them into your inventory - edit game data and see what happens. - send us cash
Fix has designed a new logo for Samoth, after I insisted a little - about three monthes, to be accurate. He wanted to illustrate what is really great in working together, what's worth spending time to. He wanted, with this logo, to show what we care of, in our inner side.
But he finally prefered to draw a swan, arguing it was a lot prettier. He was right.
Full size (675*300px)
Altough some connection problems, we managed to bring together most of the people involved in Samoth. New goals have been alloted :
- Noon and Fix will translate the wiki for the end of June
- Ariankh will model a few monsters
- Masterconker will enhance his .scene (fixing materials problems, and making it larger)
- Growsam is going to code a dialog editor
- I'll make a fully functional 3rd person view, and replace the test scene by the Masterconker's one.
Since this meeting, we decided to worship the Banana, too.
With the new year, as promised, there is something we can show. Well, it's not as much as we planned, but it's better than before december :)
For now, you can, hum ... launch the program, load a dotScene file, play with the inventory, and see player name, life, thaumana and other counts. Which doesn't move yet, i'm afraid. You can also, now, change settings without editing a xml file.
Latest version can be found on the CVS ; binaries for Windows are available here.
Note : if you have any problem, post it in the forums ;)
After having moved to a new server, the Samoth's portal is currently migrating from Xoops to Drupal, in order to be more, hum ... efficient, beautiful, and ergonomic. And because I really love changing, too.
The galleries have already been moved to the new portal, but some pictures have been lost (during the server migration). For example, a lot of 3D pictures : if their authors could upload then again, it would be great ;)
I'm currently moving the old wiki pages to the new one, but it's not very simple (as the wiki syntax isn't the same). The old forum will be accessible in read-only, since all the topics cannot be put in the new forum.
